After the regional banks fell against the background of the fear that the PacWest bank is joining the list of collapsing regional banks, their shares are correcting sharply today. The balance sheets of the banks are full of assets that are not worth the amount in the books, the business model of the regional banks does not work in periods when the public is panicking and at the same time the high yield given on the deposits does not leave reasonable profitability. The biggest fear in the regional banking system is the escape of the depositors and against this background, yesterday there was a drop of up to 50% in the bank shares. Recall that the shares of the regional banks are more risky and vulnerable than the shares of the large banks because the regulator provides protection for deposits in the large and non-regional banks.
Following the collapses of SVB and Republic Bank, there is growing concern that other banks may suffer a similar fate. As of now, the weakness of regional banks has not spread to larger banks, which are currently benefiting from regulatory protection of deposit funds.
